2012 Celebration of Community, Philanthropy and Comedy
The Carman Area Foundation held its 6th annual Celebration of Community and Philanthropy on April 12th , which included the presentation of this year’s grants. The Foundation has reached a new level for granting …. $40,500 to 22 different organizations in Carman, Elm Creek, Roland, Sperling and Roseisle. Those receiving organizations are all doing great work in various ways to contribute to the health and development of our communities. Grant recipients covered the spectrum of health and wellness, public safety, education and recreation organizations. Foundation Chair Brent VanKoughnet estimated that well over $30,000 will be added to the Foundation’s endowment funds as a result of this year’s event, pushing our granting capability to even higher levels in the years to come.
For the first time, Carman Collegiate’s Youth in Philanthropy group participated in this event. Students in this group raised over $1,500 through movie nights and other fundraising activities. They identified three projects and contributed a total of $1,300 to: Carman and Area Palliative Care for a warming cabinet for blankets, Child & Family Services Foundation for their Chance2Camp program for underprivileged children, and a grant to the Town of Carman to maintain the skating rink at Ryall Park. In each case the Area Foundation was able to leverage those gifts with additional matching dollars. The activity and growth of this young group is evidence that a new generation is stepping up to continue the deeply rooted traditions of community spirit and giving that exist in Carman.
